Antique Low Board, Yamagata Shonai Tansu, Taisho - early Showa period. Shonai-dansu is a traditional craft made in the Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture, with a history dating back to the early Edo period. Made of hard woods such as zelkova and paulownia, they are characterized by their beautiful finish, which makes the most of the grain of the wood, and by their sturdy construction. There are various types of chests, including costume chests, tableware chests, and wedding chests. In particular, many costume chests are decorated with elaborate carvings and metal fittings, and are popular as high-end furniture. While inheriting traditional techniques, they have been improved to make them easier to use in modern life. In recent years, they have also become one of the most popular traditional crafts among the younger generation.
